Incident concerning detection of an unidentified submarine
1. At 6:56 today, in the territorial waters of Japan around the Bungo Channel, the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyer Atago sighted what appeared to be a periscope of a submarine.
2. The destroyer Atago immediately commenced search activities using active sonar and other devices. It was judged as a result that it was very likely to be a submarine, which was reported to the higher command.
3. At 8:13, the Self-Defense Fleet Headquarters confirmed that the submarine in question was not a submarine of Japan's SDF. Furthermore, it was judged that the objective had moved out of the territorial waters.
4. The search activities continue to be implemented by destroyers and aircraft.
