There are various fields of work - from flight, air control and maintenance, to logistic support.

The mission of JASDF is to prevent an incursion by enemy aircraft or the landing of a foreign enemy. In order to carry this out, fighter aircraft units, aircraft control and warning groups, anti-aircraft troops are disposed throughout the nation, and other units and organizations such as depots, schools, and hospitals, are engaged in the support of these. Furthermore, efforts to maintain and increase peace and stability of the international community, are carried out through the dispatch of aid in the event of a major disaster and through international peace cooperation works. In this way, for JASDF to follow through in a highly diverse area, the work of a Self-Defense official also covers a wide range of fields, from aviation and those relating to defense equipment such as "air control", "interception air control", "equipment", "anti-aircraft artillery", to logistic support such as "information", "weather", "communications electronics", "programming", "transportation", and "facilities".
By aggressively improving the skills of the individual, the group as a whole makes full use of the high tech equipment.

In JASDF, in addition to military personnel, there are also administrative officials, engineering officials, and instructors, etc. JASDF Personnel belong to nationally distributed units and agencies, etc, and carry out work centered on administrative affairs, such as "general affairs", "welfare", "accounts", "judicial affairs" "procurement", and "supply". Also, engineer officials conduct technical research, providing needed research and development for the maintenance and improvement of the technical level of air defense. Instructors carry our fundamental survey research on the control and maintenance of JASDF, and work toward the education of highly qualified officials. By routine training and education of all Self-Defense Force officials and personnel, the expertise and abilities of the individual are progressively raised, resulting in the full use of high-tech equipment by JASDF.
